About AlarmSwap & how we source
AlarmSwap is a small, independent reference for one job: working out whether the smoke or CO alarm on your ceiling is due for replacement, and what can replace it without guesswork.
What counts as a source
A fact goes on this site only if we read it on one of these, and every fact links to the exact page or PDF:
- The alarm's maker: product pages, user guides and support articles published by the brand itself (for example Kidde, First Alert, Google Nest, X-Sense, Universal Security Instruments).
- NFPA, the National Fire Protection Association.
- USFA, the U.S. Fire Administration (part of FEMA).
- CPSC, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, for recalls.
We don't use retailer listings, forums or other directories as sources, and we don't copy text, tables or images. Facts are restated in our own words.
How a page is checked
- Every fact is stored with its
source_url,source_titleand the date wecheckedit. - The site will not build if any fact is missing one of those, or if a source isn't on the list above.
- When a maker doesn't state something (for example, no replacement model named on a discontinued product), the page says that plainly.
What this site is not
It is not installation or electrical advice, and it is not an emergency resource. Wiring work belongs to a qualified electrician, and the alarm's own manual wins over anything here.
Corrections
If a maker changes a page or we got something wrong, please open an issue on GitHub with the model and the source link. We re-check the page and update its "checked" dates.
